Thesis precis: How would a critical care ward be built if it was designed to take full advantage of the communication technology that will be available to us in the year 2030?

To answer this question, interviews were held with people who affect or are affected by the design of critical care rooms. Simultaneously, exploratory research was performed to identify trends in communication technology that will likely be ubiquitous and affordable in 20 years’ time.

Individual design strategies were proposed that would address the concerns raised in the interviews through creative use of upcoming technologies, and the final room design is an attempt integrate those strategies while remaining a comfortable, human space for patients.

This project was presented at the CICC’s 2011 GIM Symposium at MaRS to an audience of 200 healthcare professionals.
